This piece is, like a lot of my music, influenced by a fine art work. An exhibition of Paul Gauguin's pictures showed me the magic of the clearly shaped areas filled with marvellous colours, wich led me to the wish to hear music filled with areas like in his pictures. In Japan I found magic areas in a lot of paintings, including for example the famous raku-chu/raku-gai works, the genji-monogatari e-maki, works of Sotatsu etc.. All this paintings are discribed in art catalogues by "ink, colours and gold on paper", so I choosed this as a title.
Vibriting areas on a golden background, somtimes covered with golden clouds (genji-gumo) have strong energy, without forcing the observer into a special thought or emotion. The golden background gives the colours an intensive illumination. There is no perspective wich leads to somewhere, the flat background dematerializes itself. This effect can be also experienced in japanese style rooms with flat walls and is very special, if it is a byobu-e standing in the room wich creates a space in the space.
To get strong deep colours in the areas, I used the technique of overlaying two layers of mixed coulours:
These two layers are representeted by the group clarinet/piano and the group flute/violoncello/percussion, wich are playing the same music but in a different realization. The listener can choose on wich group he concentrates or maybe on the golden background/foreground played by the violins, coming to the space behind the music.
